The Big Shake: 'Hands Across America' 20 Years Later

For "Hands Across America" to work, organizers called on millions of Americans to form a 4,125-mile human chain. They were to hold hands for 15 minutes, sing "We Are the World" and the event would help raise money to feed America's homeless. The line stretched through cities, over mountains and across rivers, although there were many gaps, and some were more than a hundred miles long.
