Last Laughs (and Sappy Moments) From Sitcom Finales
"M*A*S*H" set the standard for melodramatic sitcom final episodes. The half-hour show ended its 11-year run with a 2½-hour lovefest. In it, Hawkeye suffers a nervous breakdown, Father Mulcahy loses his hearing, and Klinger falls in love and vows to stay in Korea with the women he loves, after years of wearing a dress and trying every ploy to get sent home. Critics slammed the show as embarrassingly sentimental and self-congratulatory, but 125 million people tuned in, making it one of the most-watched events in TV history.
